Acne

Pimples, blackheads and painful bumps on the face, chest or back, in teens or in adults. Dr. Pan checks the cause first, then makes a plan.

See what a first visit involves

Please bring the creams, washes and medicines you have tried, and a list of the medicines, supplements and herbs you take now.

First, check the cause

Acne starts in blocked pores, with oil and bacteria. It is very common in teens, and many adults have it too. Hormones, some medicines and family history play a part.

How it is treated

  • Washing gently twice a day with a mild cleanser. No scrubbing, picking or squeezing — that leads to scars.
  • Pharmacy products: benzoyl peroxide, or adapalene gel. These help many people with mild acne.
  • Prescription creams; antibiotic pills for a few months; or, for women, hormone treatment such as certain birth control pills or spironolactone.
  • For severe or scarring acne, isotretinoin, through a dermatologist.
  • Acupuncture: very thin needles. In Chinese medicine it clears heat from the skin, calming redness and inflamed spots.
  • Chinese herbs, prescribed for your pattern, to clear heat and calm inflamed skin, so fewer new spots come up. They are checked against the medicines you already take.

How many visits

Usually once a week at first. Six to eight visits make a course; then you and Dr. Pan look at how much better your skin is: fewer new spots, less redness.

Common questions

Is acne caused by dirty skin or food?

Dirt is not the cause, and washing too hard can make it worse. Some people find sugary foods or milk make it worse; Dr. Pan can help you find your own triggers.

Why does my skin look worse at first?

Some creams, such as adapalene, can make acne look a little worse in the first few weeks. Keep going unless your skin is very sore, and tell us.

Do I need a dermatologist?

Most acne is treated right here. Dr. Pan will refer you for severe or scarring acne, or if isotretinoin may be needed.
