Asthma

Wheezing, a tight chest, shortness of breath, or a cough that is worse at night or with exercise. Dr. Pan checks the cause first, then makes a plan. Your inhalers stay the main treatment.

See what a first visit involves

Please bring all your inhalers, your asthma action plan if you have one, and a list of the medicines, supplements and herbs you take now. It helps to notice what sets it off: colds, pollen, pets, smoke, cold air, exercise.

First, check the cause

Asthma is swelling and tightening of the airways in the lungs. It comes and goes, and can be set off by colds, allergies, smoke, cold air or exercise. Other problems, like heart trouble or acid reflux, can look like asthma or make it worse.

How it is treated

  • Inhalers prescribed for you. A controller inhaler, which calms the swelling in the airways, is the main treatment. Do not stop it on your own, even when you feel well.
  • A written asthma action plan, so you know what to do when it gets worse.
  • Checking that you use your inhaler the right way.
  • Finding and avoiding what sets it off: smoke, dust, mold, pets, pollen. If you smoke, quitting helps a lot.
  • A yearly flu shot, and other vaccines you need.
  • Acupuncture, alongside your inhalers: very thin needles. A long-established treatment for asthma in Chinese medicine, it eases a tight chest, shortness of breath and cough, and helps reduce attacks.
  • Chinese herbs, prescribed for your pattern, to strengthen the lungs and ease cough and phlegm. They are checked against the medicines you already take.

How many visits

Usually once a week at first. Six to eight visits make a course; then you and Dr. Pan look at how much better you are: fewer symptoms, using the rescue inhaler less, better sleep.

Common questions

Can I use acupuncture and herbs with my inhalers?

Yes — they work well together. Keep using your inhalers as prescribed; never stop any medicine on your own. Any change to your inhalers happens only after your asthma has stayed well controlled for a few months, step by step, with Dr. Pan.

Are steroid inhalers safe long term?

Used as directed, yes, for most people. Very little of the medicine reaches the rest of the body. Rinse your mouth after each use.

Do I need a breathing test?

Often, yes. A breathing test (spirometry) helps confirm asthma and shows how well it is controlled. Dr. Pan will order one if you need it.
