Chinese Medicine
Eye pain
Eye pain has many causes. Dr. Pan checks the cause first, then makes a plan. For eye strain or dry eye, acupuncture and herbs ease the discomfort.
Please bring the report from your last eye exam, and a list of the medicines, eye drops, supplements and herbs you use now. Tell us if you wear contact lenses.
How it is treated
- The cause decides the treatment, and your eye doctor leads it: eye drops, pills, or laser or surgery.
- For eye strain: regular screen breaks. Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Get your glasses checked.
- For dry eye: artificial tears, warm compresses on the eyelids, and other treatment your eye doctor advises.
- Acupuncture: very thin needles, for eye strain or dry eye discomfort. It eases tired, dry, aching eyes and makes screen time easier.
- Chinese herbs, for the same problems, prescribed for your pattern to nourish tired, dry eyes. They are checked against the medicines you already take.
- If you have glaucoma or another eye disease, keep the treatment your eye doctor gives, and keep using your eye drops as prescribed.
How many visits
For eye strain or dry eye, usually once a week at first. Six to eight visits make a course; then you and Dr. Pan look at how much better you are: eyes that feel less tired or dry, easier screen time.
Common questions
I have glaucoma. Can I still have acupuncture?
Yes, alongside your glaucoma care. Glaucoma is treated with the eye drops, laser or surgery your eye doctor advises; keep using your eye drops as prescribed, and never stop them on your own.
Can I use eye drops from the pharmacy?
Artificial tears are fine for dry eyes.
