Obesity

Weight that is hard to lose and has started to affect your health: blood pressure, blood sugar, joints, sleep. Dr. Pan checks the cause first. Food, movement, sleep and, when it fits, medicine are the main treatment; acupuncture and herbs work alongside, helping curb appetite and cravings and regulate metabolism.

See what a first visit involves

Please bring a list of the medicines, supplements and herbs you take now, including any slimming teas or pills, and any recent blood tests. It also helps to think about what you have tried before.

First, check the cause

Weight gain often has more than one cause. Dr. Pan checks for thyroid problems, sleep apnea, insulin resistance, and medicines that add weight, such as steroids and some medicines for mood, seizures or diabetes.

How it is treated

  • Food, movement and sleep, in small steps you can keep up.
  • Medicine, including GLP-1 medicines (the weekly shots), when they are right for you. See the medical weight loss page.
  • Care for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and sleep apnea at the same time.
  • Acupuncture: very thin needles. It helps curb appetite and cravings and regulate metabolism, and works well alongside food, movement and medicine.
  • Chinese herbs, prescribed for your pattern, to strengthen digestion and clear dampness, the Chinese medicine view of many weight problems. They are checked against the medicines you already take.
  • A referral for weight-loss surgery, if it fits.

How many visits

Usually once a week at first. Six to eight visits make a course; then you and Dr. Pan look at how much better you are: appetite, eating habits, waist size, energy.
