Chinese Medicine
Type 2 diabetes
High blood sugar that needs long-term care. It used to be called non-insulin-dependent diabetes, but many people with type 2 use insulin too. Medicine, food and exercise are the core of treatment. Dr. Pan checks your sugars and medicines first, then makes a plan. Acupuncture and herbs work alongside, helping regulate blood sugar and easing numb feet and tiredness.
Please bring your blood sugar meter or log, any recent A1c results, and a list of the medicines, supplements and herbs you take now, including insulin.
How it is treated
- Diabetes medicine, chosen to fit you. Some newer medicines also protect the heart and kidneys. Never stop a diabetes medicine on your own.
- Food and movement: fewer sugary drinks and white starches, more vegetables, regular walking. Losing some weight, if needed, can bring blood sugar down a lot.
- Regular checks: A1c every three to six months, kidney and cholesterol tests, an eye exam with drops (usually every year), and foot checks.
- Acupuncture: very thin needles. It helps regulate blood sugar and eases numbness and burning in the feet. It works together with your diabetes medicine — keep taking it as prescribed.
- Chinese herbs, prescribed for your pattern, help regulate blood sugar and ease tiredness and numb feet. They are checked against the medicines you already take.
How many visits
Usually once a week at first. Six to eight visits make a course; then you and Dr. Pan look at how much better you are: your sugar log, how your feet feel, your energy, and your next A1c.
Common questions
Can I use herbs with my diabetes medicine?
Yes — they work well together. Keep taking your diabetes medicine as prescribed; never stop it on your own. If your A1c and sugars stay good over time, Dr. Pan may lower your medicine with you, step by step.
Can type 2 diabetes go away?
With weight loss, blood sugar can come back to normal, and regular checks help keep it there.
