Sprains

An ankle or wrist that twisted and is now swollen, bruised, and sore to stand or lean on. Dr. Pan checks the cause first, then makes a plan.

See what a first visit involves

Please bring any X-ray reports, and a list of the medicines, supplements and herbs you take now. It helps to remember how it happened: a twist, a fall, a bad landing.

What a sprain is

A sprain is a stretched or torn ligament, the band that holds a joint together. Most sprains heal in a few weeks.

How it is treated

  • In the first few days: rest, ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, a compression wrap, and keeping it raised.
  • Then gentle movement and exercises as soon as the pain allows. This heals better than long rest. Physical therapy if you need it.
  • Pain medicine such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if it is safe for you. A brace or support for a while.
  • Acupuncture: very thin needles. A long-established treatment for sprains in Chinese medicine, it eases pain and swelling and helps you move again sooner.
  • Chinese herbs, prescribed for your pattern, to get the blood moving, bring down swelling and ease pain. They are checked against the medicines you already take.

How many visits

Usually once a week at first. Most sprains are much better in two to six weeks. After a few visits, you and Dr. Pan look at how much better you are: less pain and swelling, easier walking.

Common questions

Do I need an X-ray?

Only if you cannot put weight on it, the bone is tender, or it is slow to get better. Then Dr. Pan will order one.

Should I keep it still until it heals?

Rest for the first few days, then start moving gently. Gentle movement helps the joint heal better and stay strong, so it is less likely to sprain again.

Why does my ankle keep twisting?

After a sprain, balance and muscle strength need time to come back. Balance and strength exercises help keep it from happening again.
